Dr NakaMats

“Long life should be longer. Speech should be short.” — Dr Yoshiro Nakamatsu’s eight-word acceptance speech as he received the 2005 Ig Nobel Prize in Nutrition for photographing every meal he has eaten during the past 35 years.

He’s 83 this year, so it isn’t too late for anyone to start. Especially since he believes that he’ll live till 144 — it’ll only be too late if you’re 111. And to make his job easier, he only eats one meal a day, 700 calories, in the evening.

He also holds some 3,357 patents (“compared to Thomas Edison’s 1093″ he’ll have you know). Amongst them is the “Love Jet invention – a potion that women can wear behind their ears or spray on their genitals, which removes the need for foreplay. “I have tested about 10,000 women,” he says. “I am not doing the sex. I check the meters.”"

via The Inventions of Dr NakaMats, which I watched on April 30, 2012.

Seabass Hobo Pack

Lucked out with some seabass from Sheng Shiong today and decided to make a hobo pack, something that we last made way back in Punggol. We always mess fish up. It’s always undercooked or overcooked. The only times we have fish that’s done properly was when Mom made it. So we’re particularly pleased that today’s giant seabass turned out perfectly cooked and seasoned!

Main ingredients
1 seabass (probably about 1kg)
10 (or more) fresh shitake mushrooms

Aromatics
lemongrass, 4 sticks
ginger
onions
1/2 lemon, slice
kaffir lime leaves, julienned

Seasoning
1 bottle essence of fish (from the hospital)
palm sugar
sesame oil
soy sauce
half a lemon

Read all the instructions before you begin because the aromatics go all over the place.
Preheat the oven to 220°C on fan-assisted grill setting.
Arrange the lemongrass, ginger, onions, kaffir and mushrooms on an extra large sheet of aluminium foil.
Stuff the fish with some aromatics.
Put the fish on top of the aromatics and mushrooms.
Pour the seasoning over the fish.
Top the fish with slices of lemon, and a sprinkling of julienned kaffir.
Bake for 20 minutes.

In the Carpet Shop

With Pinterest around, it’s harder than ever to find blog-worthy nuggets. But I think this photo from “the sausage photographs, 1979″ by Peter Fischli and David Weiss is definitely worth blogging about. [via Design Bridge]

Red Line

The most important thing a creative person can learn professionally is where to draw the red line that separates what you are willing to do, and what you are not.

Definition

The Sentence of the Month for July is Lil Wayne: “My picture should be in the dictionary next to the definition of definition.”

Last week’s Sentence of the Week is Haruki Murakami’s assessment of marriage: “Marriage is perhaps rather an ongoing process of each partner exposing what the other lacks.”

And this week’s Sentence of the Week is a text from my sister, who studies the indigenous language Sahaptin: “This one word, awiyatxnuwáynana, means ‘going by, he gave it a kick.’ ”

Quinoa, Pumpkin Herb & Cheese Patties

1 cup (or more) pumpkin, steamed
2 cups quinoa
2 packs Italian parsley
1/2 cup Emmental cheese
1 egg
paprika
sea salt, to taste
breadcrumbs for coating

Forget about frying, it’s a big waste of time. The patties won’t stay together.
They stay together better after resting the mixture for a while when the quinoa has had a chance to absorb some of the egg. Coat in breadcrumbs and place on oil aluminium-lined tray. Bake in preheated oven at 180°C for 20 minutes or until the crumbs are golden brown.
